For the past week, I try to take a little walk every day in the morning.
I wake up at 6 o’clock on weekdays, do some exercise, take a cup of coffee, and walk about 30 minutes.
While taking a walk for a few days, I realised the differences between the passing people. And the story of this difference is one of the secrets that cause serendipity.
What is Serendipity
If you don’t understand the horizontal letters Serendipity, check out wikipedia.
From Serendip (“variant of Serendib: Ceylon, Sri Lanka”) + -ity. Coined by English writer and politician Horace Walpole in 1754 based on the Persian story of The Three Princes of Serendip, who (Walpole wrote to a friend) were “always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of”.
NounQuote: Wikipedia – serendipity
– An unsought, unintended, and/or unexpected, but fortunate, discovery and/or learning experience that happens by accident.
– A combination of events which are not individually beneficial, but occurring together to produce a good or wonderful outcome.
That is unexpected lucky.
When it comes to occur something unexpectedly, it feels like a contradiction, but in this article, I will write about the chance of serendipity probably increases dramatically by my way.
What I felt from the morning walk?
It may not be so common in Japan now, but in NZ it is normal that you do greeting when you see a passing person.
For example, when I stopped and watched the beautiful sunrise over the sea, an uncle standing next to me talk me like,
What a beautiful morning, eh?
It happens often.
It’s a casual morning exchange, but there are a day when I have some chit chats and never.
What is the difference between when there is much passing communication and when there is little communication?
I realized that it was the difference between raising my face and trying to see various things or not.
It is obvious, but lately we don’t
What the xxxx is that! That’s obvious!
Someone might say like this, but what’s important is that you don’t do this obvious thing.
I realized that I was looking at my cell phone and staying in my mind while walking. And I didn’t have the time to walk just with curiosity.
As a result, less information is coming in and making it harder to recognize normal things which you usually see obviously.
My eyes might be physically catch someone’s, but when I was thinking, I didn’t recognize that I see someone each other. This is the problem.
Being open means being ready to react to others. In other words, I think that I’m not only in the world inside myself but also in the world outside me. I think it is important to be in conscious about the outside world and become aware various things.
What you get by turning your attention to the world outside of yourself?
What do you get if you turn your attention to the outside world?
Serendipity appears here.
For example, from a casual conversation in the morning, you can get information on delicious cafes nearby, and sometimes, you would go out for a drink together with him.
I think this is a common story, but the last lucky story I have had is something like this.
Currently, my wife and I are unemployed.
We wanted to save the living expenses including rent as much as possible, and we wanted to do a small job if possible. After moving to Wellington, we decided to choose a cheaper Airbnb life from my hostel life.
When I arrived at Airbnb’s house, the owner was fluttering and preparing for the house.
Airbnb is a service that allows you to rent your own home, for example, like a guest house, and usually you will have to hire a part-time job for cleaning and bed making. Occasionally, the owner himself/herself provides the room while living together, and in this case, the owner makes the bed.
From the owner’s perspective, I thought that he lives in another house and rented out an empty house, so I asked the owner, “Don’t you usually hire staff to prepare a room?”
Then, although it used to be and he is just recruiting.
From the flow of such a story, he asked us “why don’t you try two of you if you like?”.
The rent will be cheaper, and the amount of work will be deducted from the rent and handed over. We can stay in the best room. Of course, the parking fee seems to be free.
It is a very good deal for us now!
The point of this story is to pay attention to the outside world and notice the owner’s atmosphere, which may be different from usual. This caused serendipity.
Turn your consciousness outward with curiosity
Actually, I often come across such a lucky.
It often happens during a trip, for example, something that should have been sold out at a restaurant but when I returned to a guesthouse, I could eat it by talking about it with owner.
What I become aware during the walk this morning is that my high curiosity (I call it the power of curiosity) is one factor that causes serendipity. By looking to the outside of world and talking to various people with following curiosity, you can get lucky that you never thought of.
This is something anyone can do.
By all means, when you go on a trip or when you walk outside, follow your heart and try to communicate with the world outside of you.
